Nancy-Susan Smith, 84, of Brockton, passed away peacefully Monday, November 6 at home with her family.

Born September 24, 1933 in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Sylvia and Dorothy (Vining) Sylvia.  She moved to Brockton as a young girl and was a 1951 graduate of Brockton High School where she played softball, volleyball, field hockey and basketball.  She was a 1983 graduate of Massasoit Community College, earning an Associate in Science degree and being included in Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges.

Nancy was very active in her community.  She was a long-time member of the BHS Class of 51 Reunion Committee, and served on the board of directors of Brockton Community Cable Television, the Brockton Public Library, and the DW Field Park Association.  She was on the Board of Trustees of Massasoit Community College for ten years, and was President of the college’s Alumni Association.  She was on the Brockton Centennial Quilt Commission, the Memorial Society of Greater Brockton, a Leaps in Literacy volunteer, a volunteer for the Jimmy Fund and a long-time Red Cross blood donor.

Nancy was honored as a 1998 Enterprise Champion of the City of Brockton, a Brockton Woman of the Year, a Massasoit Community College Green Key Society Member for unselfish contribution to the college, and received a Lifetime Commitment Award for her efforts on behalf of the Jimmy Fund.

Nancy loved her home and her family.  She was an avid swimmer.  She enjoyed calligraphy, sewing, singing, baking and reading.

Nancy was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Robert F. Smith, her son, Craig Smith, and her son Robert F. Smith Jr.  She is survived by her sister, Shirley Wrightington of Mansfield, her son Joseph Smith of Phillipston, her son Donald Smith of Brockton, grandchildren Jennifer Emslie, Amy Smith-Rutzen, Katie Smith, Matthew Smith, Carolyn Fonte and Brian Smith, and great-grandchildren Madison and Braxton Rutzen, Jack and Harrison Emslie, and Lucy Fonte.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 15 at 10 am at the Universalist Unitarian Church, 325 West Elm St., Brockton, followed by internment at the Bourne National Veterans Cemetery.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Hope Health, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601.
