Betty Ramage Obituary

Betty Morgan Ramage was taken from her fiercely loving and devoted family by coronavirus on May 28, 2020 in Norwood Hospital, Norwood, Massachusetts. As far as her loved ones can tell she was, at once, as she remained for the rest of her life to be, a force to be reckoned with. Upon knowing her, her husband David Ramage,Jr. understood this to be true. We, her children - David Ramage (Corinne Skibitsky), Jonathan Ramage (Deborah McLellan), Elizabeth Ramage (Adam Hoffinger), and Daniel Ramage (Lynne Veit) - are stronger and more resilient for that fact. Betty and Dave shared an active, passionate, complex, challenging, joyful and fruitful life leaving ten thriving grandchildren - Benjamin Ramage (Hope Richardson), Liza Ramage (Steve Stromberg), Morgan Ramage (James Tomasello), Nicolas Ramage (Samantha Chu), Katherine Hoffinger, William Hoffinger, Margaret Hoffinger, Jessica Ramage, David Ramage and Jake Ramage and six precious great grandchildren - Sylvan Ramage, Dylan Stromberg, Kyle Stromberg, Addison Tomasello, Henry Ramage, and Sadie Ramage. Betty is predeceased by Walter Morgan, her only brother, as well as her stepsister Georgia Miller Smith. Also she leaves behind an enormous host of flourishing nieces and nephews, and innumerous life-long kindred spirits to whom she brought, and from whom she received, joy and comfort.

Betty Anne Morgan was born in Shinnston, West Virginia on August 27,1929 to Walter Morgan and Mae Campbell Morgan. At age 14 she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio with her mother and her younger brother, Walter Morgan (Bud). She graduated from Norwood High School in Norwood, Ohio and went on to attend The Jewish Hospital School of Nursing. In 1951 Betty married Dave, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio and a fellow graduate of Norwood High School. Together they relocated to Chicago, Illinois where Dave attended McCormick Theological Seminary and their four children were born. In 1963 they moved to Huntington, New York where Betty was deeply involved in her children’s upbringing and volunteered tirelessly in the Huntington public school system. From 1968 to1969 the family moved to Geneva, Switzerland where Dave worked for the World Council of Churches. Betty adored her adventures abroad with her family. In 1970 the family moved to Washington, D.C. where Betty attended George Washington University, she thrived there and became very active in the American Association of University Women. Five years later brought Betty and Dave to Cresskill, New Jersey. Betty worked as a Senior Legal Assistant at the Shearman and Sterling Law Firm in New York City. In 1985 they relocated back to Chicago, Illinois where Dave served as the President of McCormick Theological Seminary, his alma mater, and Betty worked as the Senior Administrative Legal Supervisor at The Northern Trust. They later retired to Marco Island, Florida and Reston, Virginia, where they were both very generously and enthusiastically involved in spending time with their collective grandchildren. Betty lost Dave on February 14, 2010. She lived with her son Daniel and his family in Deep River, Connecticut for several years, bringing her back to her beloved Long Island Sound. Finally she relocated to Boston, Massachusetts where she was tenderly and tirelessly cared for by her son Jonathan and his loving family for almost seven long years. Under Jonathan’s care, our Mom found finally her safe harbor, and peace of mind. She was stoic and radiantly graceful until the end. As she said so often sitting in her beautiful room, with Jon at her side, “I am fine!”.
