Dorothea C. Hosom passed away on January 30, 2023 at the age of 86. She was the wife of David S. Hosom for 64 years. She was born in Rostock, Germany, the daughter of Charles T. Clorius and Charlotte Tessenow Clorius. At age 13 she immigrated with her mother and brother to New York, where her father had settled two years earlier.
After completing high school, Dorothea enrolled at the University of Cincinnati where she studied psychology and met her future husband. Upon graduating in 1958, they moved to New York, where she worked as a social worker for several years. After her children entered school she earned a graduate degree in library science from Long Island University. Following the family’s move to Falmouth in 1971, she worked for many years in the circulation department at Falmouth Public Library.
Having a long-standing interest in late twentieth century art, Dorothea maintained a jewelry studio until last year, and had begun to work in clay, as well. Her jewelry work has been included in publications as well as juried museum exhibitions in the United States and Japan. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed gardening, tent camping, and long walks.
Dorothea had the rare talent of being able to talk with anyone with any point of view, and make them feel listened to, heard, and understood.
Predeceased by her husband, she leaves her daughter and son-in-law Johanna Roveto and Peter Roveto of Duxbury, MA; her son and daughter-in-law John-Paul Hosom and Tiffany Gates of Portland, OR; grandchildren Matthew and Julia Roveto; and a brother Dr. John H. Clorius and his wife Dr. Renate Clorius of Heidelberg, Germany, along with their children Sandra Schlotmann and Tim Clorius and their wonderful families.
A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
