Mr. Smith (aka Mel) was my second father... and I will miss him dearly.
It was 1973, Jeff was one of my best friends, I went into the Navy to play on submarines. While in boot camp my family moved out of Easton to Illinois. Jeff actually helped them drive out west with my 3 siblings and a gang of pets in a white pickup truck with a camper.
When I was nervous about coming home to Easton to see my then girlfriend (for 14 years) and now wife (of 28 years) Carol Baird; the Smiths offered to let me stay at their house. The love, acceptance Mel and Bev gave me. The requirement to have an all family members attend dinner every evening, washing hair in the downstairs sink, no shower in this classical abode, that steep driveway, the firm but loving (no nonsense) parenting. I think they wrote the original book on how to be the best parents. Wait.... why did Mel never shave on Saturday mornings when he did yard work? How was Jennifer so very smart and Missy so damn cute? The Visiting Nurses, the Easton Historical Commission. The wonderful legacy the Smith Family established and will continue to live. A walk across the street to pout rock. Different wall paper in every room and a plan to cycle through changing those every few years. These are just a few wonderful memories flooding in.
Thank you Mel for the being the great adopted father you were to me and Beverly... no words will ever capture your awesomeness. Love you forever, Moe.

Our hearts go out to Aunt Bev, Jennifer, Jeff, Missy and their families. Cherished indeed, we will always have so many memories of family gatherings - weddings, clambakes, birthdays - with Uncle Mel holding court with his ukulele as the evenings wore down. Our love to all.
Wonderful man - wonderful family!
